Dear Families,
We have a field trip to the University of Oregon Museum of
Cultural and Natural History this Wednesday, November 15th. I still need permission slips from 6
students. Please check your child’s
backpack tonight for an orange permission slip.
Wednesday was an exciting morning. Second graders finally were able to erupt
their volcanoes. If you want to erupt
the volcano at home all you need is baking soda and vinegar. Your child can show you how it works!
In other news we are continuing our study of bats. Last week we put a few layers of paper mache
on our nocturnal creatures. Next some
students have decided to add wings as well.
We are hoping to have our bats completed by art walk, December 7th.
In Language Arts students are finishing up their final drafts of their ‘Bat
Stories’. Students were challenged to
integrate true bat facts with a creative writing story. It has been exciting to explore the entire
writing process, drafting, editing, revising, and completing a final draft for
this assignment.
Our language arts focus is slowly transitioning from bats to
Medieval Times. This was such a popular
topic during project I decided to incorporate it into our literacy
activities. Students are in literature
groups reading Knights & Castles or Knight Before Dawn. Each student will complete a novel study for
this unit. After Thanksgiving Break
students will create their own castle.
Please start saving as many shoe boxes and empty paper towel cardboard
rolls as you can. We need 30 shoe boxes
and enough empty paper towel cardboard rolls for each student to have at least
4 (120 total). Thank you for your
donations!
Wishing you a wonderful week,
~Donna
