City Hall Project

Spring 2015, 4th and 5th grade students worked in groups to create scale model designs of what they envision the new City Hall plaza space to look like.  We worked 6 weeks on this project.  Students EXPLORED City Hall Plaza Spaces, then they worked in teams to DESIGN their vision. After meeting with City Officials, students choose the favorite aspects of their designs and then CREATED and REFINED their scale models. Finally it was time to OWN their work on presentation day when city officials joined us in class to hear our ideas. Our story was covered by a local radio station.  Here is the link:  KLCC.ORG Two weeks later, the models went on display for the public to view, and two teams presented their ideas at a city council meeting! This was covered in our local newspaper. Here is the link: http://registerguard.com/rg/news/local/33213320-75/kids-make-plaza-mock-ups.html.csp
Throughout this projects students developed many skills including collaboration, creativity, design, mathematics, and presentation. This project is an excellent example of Project Based Learning at it's best.
