What's Happening in room 6???

Our science walk was very fun. Donna found a lottery ticket. Also working with first graders is awesome.

On Wednesday we walked to Amazon Creek and I was in a group with only 5th grade girls. We picked up a lot of trash and we were exploring the creek.

This week our class went to Amazon Creek to collect the water to test the salinity. We also found a bunch of trash which was sad to see there. It was also a good day to go there because it was sunny and not rainy like it always is!!!

Last Wednesday, our class went to Amazon creek and studied it for the second week in a row. We split into three groups, one to look at human impact at the creek, one to look at the animals near the creek, and one to look at the water in the creek. There were lots of animals near the creek including Mallards.

On Wednesday 23rd of October 2013, we walked to Amazon Creek with my mom and the 2010, teacher of the year Donna DuBois. She is my aunt . We had an awesome day there. We picked up trash to help the environment. We found a lot of trash at Amazon and we called the trash negative human impact.

This week my favorite day at school was writing with the first graders . It was AWESOME

I think that reading to first graders is really fun and helping them write is great too.

We drew scientific drawings of a picture of a killifish.

Welcome to 2013 - 2014 School Year!

Hi Families and Students,

Perhaps this will be the year I keep up with this blog.  I am hoping to have students post things we are doing in class.  To start, I have comments from October in room 6. Actually, we have spent a good part of October outside of room 6.  We are doing things such as partnering with a first grade class to work on reading and writing.  We are also getting outside and visiting our local Amazon Creek. Here we are conducting water quality  analysis, observing nature, and doing some community clean up in the area. When the sun shines, you will likely find us walking to the creek to do real world scientific work.
In class our big Native Cultures Project and Research Paper is due this Friday.  I hope parents and students alike are learning a lot together! Have a wonderful week, ~Ms. D

November 9th

Dear Parents,

The Native Culture Museum was a grand success! The students each presented their project and information to 4 classes of students. Students who were unable to complete a project at home were give help in class so everyone had something to present. Thank you for your continued support of your child!

On another note, we are getting low on snacks. If you can donate any type of crackers we would be thankful!

BUDDY TIME

Students are doing a wonderful job mentoring our first grade buddy class! This week they will continue helping the younger children write imaginative caterpillar stories from the point of view of the caterpillar.

CLASS PARTY

We had a wonderful fall party last week! Students brought in snacks. We also were happy to welcome Liz and JoAnn who volunteered in class to help with the celebration. Many thanks to everyone who helped make this event a success!

Language Arts Block

*Writing: During Language Arts this week we will begin final copies of the turkey point of view rough draft.

*Reading: Students are continuing one of the following books: Soft Rain, Sing Down the Moon, or Jesse Smoke. All books integrate the social studies theme of Native American Culture in the 1800’s.

*Spelling: New spelling words can be found in your child’s binder. Students can choose any list. They do not have to pick the same list each week. Remember to practice at http://spellingcity.com

*Science: Chemistry Focus! Last week we experimented with how to make a “Fizzy” lemon drink! Yummy!
